皆さん、こんにちは！　4月から文の構成や要素、主語と動詞の一致など、正確な文を作るために必須の決まりを学びました。今月は昨年学んだ関係代名詞から少し進んで関係副詞を学習します。関係詞と聞いただけで「わからない、面倒くさい」と思う方が多いようですが、順序だてて理解していけば決して難しくありません。昨年学習した関係代名詞と比較しながら関係副詞を理解していきましょう。今月の講座で関係詞アレルギーを克服できることを祈っています。
　田舎の静かな暮らしが大好きなGaryのパッセージ「Growing Up in Small Towns」にも関係副詞がたくさん登場します。関係副詞をしっかり理解できたら、楽しんで読めますよ！

　では、まず関係代名詞を少しだけ復習しましょう。（すっかり忘れてしまったという方は昨年11月の講座を復習して下さい）
　関係代名詞は、「接続詞＋代名詞」の二役をする便利な語でしたね。接続詞ですから、文と文をつなぎ、それと同時に代名詞の働きもするわけです。
次の①と②の二つの文を関係代名詞を使ってつないでみましょう。

[例1]	①This is the house.（これがその家です。）
	②I bought it this year.（私は、今年それを買いました。）

二つの文をつなぐ時の手順を覚えていますか？復習しましょう。

　＜手順＞

1	①と②の文で共通の語を見つけます。 （ここでは、houseとitが共通語ですね。）
2	この共通語の一方を先行詞として残し、もう一方を関係代名詞に変えます。 （ここでは、houseを先行詞として残し、itを関係代名詞whichに変えます。）
3	先行詞の後に、関係代名詞に続く節を置きます。 （ここでは、houseの後にwhich I bought this yearを置き、「私が今年買った」が「家」を修飾します。）

したがって、①+②は
This is the house which I bought this year. となります。思い出しましたか？
（これは私が今年買った家です。）
それでは次の例はどうですか。

[例2]	①This is the house.（これがその家です。）
	②I live in the house.（私は、その家に住んでいます。）

手順通りにつなぐと、

手順1	共通語は、house
手順2	①のhouse を先行詞として残し、②のhouse を関係代名詞which に変えます。
手順3	house の後に I live in を置きます。

したがって、①+②は
This is the house which I live in. または、This is the house in which I live.

さて、ここで確認しておきたいことがあります。次の二つの文を比較してみましょう。
Come here.（こちらへいらっしゃい。）
Come to Nagoya.（名古屋へいらっしゃい。）
hereはcome のすぐ後に置くことができますが、Nagoyaはtoがなければcomeの後に置くことはできません。それは、hereが副詞で「～へ」の意味も含んでいるからで、一方、Nagoya は単なる名詞で「名古屋」。「名古屋へ」にするには前置詞toが必要です。つまり、to+Nagoya（前置詞＋名詞）でhere（副詞）と同じ働きをしているわけです。
前置詞+名詞=副詞です。

ここで関係詞に戻ります。
前置詞+名詞=副詞が成り立つなら、前置詞+関係代名詞=関係副詞も成り立ちますね。
例2の①+②の文を見てみましょう。
This is the house in which I live.
前置詞+関係代名詞の部分を関係副詞に変えます。場所に関するものですからwhereを用います。This is the house where I live. となります。二つの文を並べて比べてみます。
　This is the house in which I live.
　This is the house where I live.

このように前置詞+関係代名詞に代わる関係副詞には次のような種類があります。

先行詞	関係副詞	例文
場所に関するもの	where	This is the house where I live. 　これは私が住んでいる家です。 (＝This is the house in which I live.)
時に関するもの	when	Spring is the season when many flowers come out. 　春は花がたくさん咲く季節です。 (= Spring is the season in which many flowers come out.)
the reason（理由）	why	That is the reason why I want to meet him. 　それが私が彼に会いたい理由です。 (That is the reason for which I want to meet him.)
the way（方法）	how	Tell me the way (hoｗ) you got the information. Tell me (the way ) how you got the information. 　（その情報を手に入れた方法を教えてください。） 　※関係副詞howまたは先行詞the wayのどちらか一方を省略して用い、the way how は用いられません。

念のため、別の角度から関係代名詞と関係副詞を比較しておきます。
次の二つの文の（　　）にどんな関係詞を入れますか。
1 Summer is the season (　　　) I hate.
2 Summer is the season (　　　) it gets really hot.
1にはwhich 2にはwhen が入ります。できましたか？
それぞれの文を、関係詞をとって二つの文に分けてみると良くわかりますよ。
　1はSummer is the season.と I hate the season.で先行詞のseasonが両方の文にすんなりと入ります。一方、2はSummer is the season.と It gets really hot in the season. で in を補わなければ正しい文ができません。このように関係詞をとって二つの文に分ける時、前置詞を補わなければ正しい文ができないのが関係副詞です。

では練習問題です。次の①～⑤の文の空所を関係詞で埋めましょう。（正解は最後に）

Growing Up in Small Towns
There are two kinds of people in the world. Those who prefer to live in cities and those who prefer to live better lives in small towns. That sounds a little biased but I think it is true. I grew up in small towns along the west coast of Canada. The smallest was a town on Vancouver Island called Tahsis with a population in the early seventies of a few thousand people. Tahsis was a town where you knew everyone and everyone knew you. The dentist visited by boat once a week and you didn't want to get seriously sick because the nearest hospital was hours away by boat in Gold River. Unlike impersonal big cities where people don't know their neighbors; Tahsis was a community in every way especially in fall and winter. Canadian seasonal events and holidays are fewer in number than Japan but they are very popular. Fall and winter are seasons when small communities really come together. Neighborhoods organize parties and fun things for kids to do. The first big community event was Halloween, an event when kids big and small indulge in playful dressing up in costumes. Children visit every house in the neighborhood shouting, 'Trick-or-Treat!', and then receive sweets. Nowadays, you would be hard pressed to find such spirit in large cities. These are the reasons why I'd prefer to live in a small town any day.
