皆さん、こんにちは！10月号です。
アメリカのプロ野球、MLBでは、大谷翔平選手のホームラン王競争が白熱しています。大谷選手は、アメリカのスポーツ誌の表紙をかざり、そのヘッドラインは、「He is not a new Babe Ruth. It's more than that!」（彼はベーブルースの再来ではない。それ以上だ！）でした。
今月は、このIt's more than that. から比較級をとりあげ、比較を用いた慣用表現を紹介します。
では、パターンと例文を見てみましょう。

比較級 and 比較級

ますます～ / どんどん～

The number of infected people is getting larger and larger.
（感染者の数がどんどん増えている）
　larger and larger で「（数が）どんどん大きい」

His daughter is becoming more and more beautiful.
（彼の娘は、ますます美しくなっている）
　more のつく比較級は more and more + 原形
　「ますます美しい」

the + 比較級..., the + 比較級...

～すればするほど～

The harder you work, the richer you will be.
（一生懸命働けば働くほど、裕福になる）
　You work hard. と You will be rich.の2文を
　the + 比較級で結んだもの。

The higher I went up, the colder it got.
（高く登れば登るほど寒くなった）
　I went up high. と　It got cold. の2文を
　the + 比較級で結んだもの。

（all）the + 比較級～. because ...

...だからかえって～、

...だからいっそう～

I like him all the more because he has faults.
（彼に欠点があるから、なおいっそう彼が好きだ）
　I like him all the more for his faults. と同じ意味。

では、英文を作ってみましょう。
①ここの交通量がますます増えている。
②多くの物を持てば持つほど、もっと欲しくなる。
③早ければ早いほど良い。
④私は、この温泉がぬるい（温度が高くない/ lukewarm）から、かえって好きだ。
⑤日がどんどん短くなってきている。

＜解答＞

①The traffic here is getting heavier and heavier.
②The more you have, the more you want.
③The sooner（it is）, the better（it is）.
④I like this hot spring all the more because it is lukewarm.
⑤The days are getting shorter and shorter.
