12月の別名は「師走」。師も走るくらい忙しい年末です。夏のような暑い日が、いつまでも続いたせいで、冬を実感しないうちに師走がやってきました。新年の準備を一気にしないといけないようです。「年賀状じまい」をする人が増えている昨今ですが、今年は年賀状を出すのを止める絶好のチャンスかもしれません。年賀状を送るのを止め、スマホやパソコンで新年の挨拶をするのも良いかも知れません。

「年賀状を送るのを止め、スマホで挨拶を送る」を英訳しておきましょう。

「I'll stop sending the New Year's cards and send greetings by smartphone.」

さて、今月取り上げるのは、「数字の読み方」です。

「長さ、面積や体積、温度、金額など」の読み方を学習します。

例を挙げながら紹介します。

長さ	10.5m → ten point five meters 　　（小数を読んでから単位を読む） ten meters fifty centimeters 　　（単位ごとに分けて読む）
面積 体積	面積　25m2 → twenty-five square meters 　　（平方 → squareと読む） 　1,050km2 → one thousand fifty square kilometers 体積　8m3 → eight cubic meters 　　（立方 → cubicと読む）
温度	18℃（摂氏18度） → eighteen degrees centigrade eighteen degrees Celsius （摂氏 → centigrade またはCelsiusと読む） 91℉（華氏91度） → ninety-one degrees Fahrenheit （華氏 → Fahrenheitと読む）
金額	$73.25（73ドル25セント） → seventy-three dollars and twenty-five cents seventy-three, twenty-five £3.20（3ポンド20ペンス） → three pounds and twenty pence (pence →単数形はpenny) (1 pound=100 pence) ￥500（500円） → five hundred yen （yenは複数形にしない）
