Asking Directions (行き先をたずねる)

今回は中日文子がおまわりさんに道順をたずねる場面をみましょう。

(P: police officerF: Fumiko)

F:	「Officer, would you direct me to the beach? I got lost.」
P:	「Sure. Can you see that traffic light over there?」
F:	「Uh-huh, yes.」
P:	「Turn left there, go straight for two blocks....」
F:	「Hmm...sounds confusing!」
P:	「Then go past a post office and turn right...」
F:	「Ah...let's see...」
P:	「Are you with me so far?」
F:	「Sorry, I am lost...」
P:	「Okay. I happen to be going in that direction so I'll take you there.」
F:	「Really? That's very kind of you. By the way, is there a rest room nearby? I really should go and powder my washroom...(oops) nose.」
P:	「Okay, come with me.」

文子:	おまわりさん、ビーチへ行くみちを教えてくれますか。迷ってしまったんです。
おまわりさん：	いいですよ。あそこに信号がみえますか。
文子:	はい。
おまわりさん：	あそこを左にまがってまっすぐ２ブロック行きなさい。
文子:	むずかしいわね。
おまわりさん：	それから郵便局を通り越して右にまがりなさい。
文子:	ええっと。
おまわりさん：	そこまではわかりますか。
文子:	すみません。わかりません。
おまわりさん：	いいでしょう。　ちょうどわたしもそちらのほうへ行くところですから、連れてってあげましょう。
文子:	ほんとうですか。ありがたいわ。ところでこの近くにトイレはありますか。どうしてもいきたいものですから。
おまわりさん：	えいいですよ。ついて来なさい。

おまわりさんに呼びかける時は、'Officer'といいます。時には'Mr. Policeman'と言うこともあります。道をきくときは会話にある表現の他にWould you show me the way to the beach? とかWould you tell me he way to the beach?と言う言い方も使えます。

むずかしいのはいつもdifficultだけでなく時と場合によっていろいろな単語が使わ
れます。例えば紛らわしい時にはconfusing, 複雑な時はcomplicatingと言ったり、I can't follow you.とか、It's hard to follow you.と言うこともできます。

ええっと、と言葉につまってしまった時には黙っているよりlet's see...とかlet me see...などと言ってみましょう。

私の言っている事わかりますかと言う時の表現は会話のようにAre you with me?とか Do you understand me? とかDo you follow me? とも言えます。

偶然～する時にはhappen toを使ってI happen to be going there.などと言います。 by chanceを使って、I'm going in that direction by chance.とも言えます。

感謝を表す時にはThank you.だけではなくThat's very kind of you. とかThat's very nice of you. の表現もおぼえておきましょう。

トイレはいろいろな言い方がありますが公共トイレはrest room, toilet, lavatory, washroom, men's room/women's room, powder roomなどがありますが、bathroomもよく使われます。日本ではWCとかwater closetということがありますが英語ではそうは言いません。

近くはnearby とかnear here/around hereです。

用をたす時はI want to go to the toilet.とかI want to use the rest room.などというのが簡単な表現ですが、女性の場合、I want to powder my nose.という表現も使われます。文子もそう言おうとして間違ってmy washroomと言ってしまって、言い直しています。またrelieve myselfという表現もおぼえておくと便利でしょう。例えば、I've had so much beer. I'll go and relieve myself.（ビール飲みすぎたからちょっとトイレへ行ってらくになって来るよ。）ではまだまだ暑い夏が続きそうです。When you are out in the sun don't forget to take enough liquid.(外へ出る時は水分を十分取ってください。) ではSee you soon again.
