Hello, everyone! How are you? This month, we're going to visit Yakushima, Kyushu with Fumiko. It is her first visit to the island. Now, let's begin with word check of the month.

屋久島について Wikipedia の説明をみてみましょう。

Yakushima, one of the Osumi Islands, is an island of about 500 km² and roughly 15,000 islanders to the south of Kyushyu Prefecture, Japan. The Vincennes Strait (Yakushima Kaikyo) separates it from Tanegashima. The highest point on the island is Miyanoura-dake at 1,935 meters (6,360 ft) . It is covered in dense forest noted especially for old growth Cryptomeria trees known as Sugi in Japan and magnificient Rhodedendrons.

Yakushima is Japan's wettest place, and precipitation in Yakushima is one of the world's highest at 4,000 to 10,000 mm. It is said to rain '35 days a month'. There are drier periods in autumn and winter, while heaviest downpours occur in spring and summer, often accompanied by landslides. It is the southernmost place in Japan where there is snow in the mountains, often for months, while the ocean temperature is never below 19°C.

さて文子は友達の Williams と屋久島にやって来ました。二人ともここに来るのは初めてです。二人の会話を聞いてみましょう。

Fumiko:	Here we are on Yakushima! This is where I've always wanted to come.
Williams:	Is it because you like walking in woods?
Fumiko:	Not only that. I want to see Yakushima Sugi, cryptomeria.
Williams:	You know the difficult word. Is it different from cedar or cypress?
Fumiko:	The Yakushima sugi or Yakusugi in short is over 1000 years old and makes dense woods. Most other kinds of Japanese cedar are about 500 years old or less. You know, crypto- for cryptomeria means 'hidden'.
Williams:	So the forest is so dense that everything is hidden in it.
Fumiko:	Exactly.
Williams:	We've got to be careful not to get lost.
Fumiko:	If you got lost, how about living here as an islander?
Williams:	Maybe starting an English school on the island is not a bad idea.
Fumiko:	The islanders could pay you the tuition in Yakusugi wood.
Williams:	I'd rather open a school somewhere else..

文子：	さあ、屋久島に着いたわね。ここは私がいつも来たいと思っていたところなのよ。
ウイリアムズ：	君は森の中を歩くのが好きだから？
文子：	それだけじゃないわ。屋久杉を見たいのよ。クリプトメリアと言うのよ。
ウイリアムズ：	難しい言葉を知っているね。シーダーやサイプレスと違うの？
文子：	屋久杉は樹齢1000年以上で濃い森をつくるのよ。他の日本杉は500年かそれ以下です。ねえ、 cryptomeria の crypto- というのは'隠れた'という意味なのよ。
ウイリアムズ：	つまり、森が濃くて全て隠されてしまうということ？
文子：	その通り。
ウイリアムズ：	道に迷わないように気をつけないとね。
文子：	もし道に迷ったら、ここで島民として住んだらどう？
ウイリアムズ：	この島で英語学校を始めるのもいい考えかもね。
文子：	島の人たちは屋久杉で授業料払ってくれるわよ。
ウイリアムズ：	他のところで開いた方がよさそうだね。

[ 解説 ]
一般にスギの樹齢は長くても500年程度であるが屋久杉は桁外れに長い。栄養の少ない花崗岩の島に生える屋久杉は成長が遅く木目が詰まっており、降雨が多く湿度が高いため樹脂分が多く腐りにくい特徴をもつ。そのため樹木の寿命が長いといわれ。樹齢2000年以上の大木が多い。縄文杉や紀元杉、ウィルソン株が有名である。

屋久島世界遺産に関連する表現をもう少し英語で言ってみましょう。

Yakushima Island is located between 130 and 131 degrees eastern longitude and 30 degrees northern latitude.
