A Happy New Year! 新年おめでとうございます。今年もよろしくお願いします。さて今月は中日文子はアメリカハワイ州の世界遺産である火山国立公園にやって来ました。最初にvocabulary checkをしましょう。

それではハワイ火山国立公園の簡単な説明を見てみましょう。

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
This world heritage site contains two of the most active volcanoes in the world, Mauna Loa(4,170m high) and Kilauea(1,250m high), both of which towers over the Pacific Ocean. Volcanic eruptions have created a constantly changing landscape; and the lava flows reveal surprising geological formations. Rare birds and endemic species can be found there, as well as forests of giant ferns. (UNESCO)

ここの世界遺産は世界で最も活動的な二つの活火山、マウナロア（4,170m）とキラウエア（1,250m）を含み太平洋を見下ろすようにそびえています。火山噴火は常に変化している景色をつくり、溶岩の流出は驚異的な地質構造を見せています。そこでは珍しい鳥やその地方特有な種、また大シダの森林も見られます。

さて中日文子は今回ハワイ島のキラウエア火山を見に来ました。現地ガイドのロジャーとの会話を見てみましょう。

Roger:	Here we are! This is the best place where you can see a firework show of Mt. Kilauea erupting.
Fumiko:	Fantastic! I see a big column of fire shooting and red-hot lava being spewed out!
Roger:	Beautiful, isn't it? It's really spectacular to see the eruption against the dark sky.
Fumiko:	And it's really awesome to see the lava run down the slope all the way to the sea.
Roger:	Yeah. It looks as if big snakes gliding down the mountain sticking their red tongues, hissing. When the lava hits the ocean, it causes violent steams of sea water. It is a big natural bath. It reminds me of a big roten bath I took in Tohoku.
Fumiko:	And the lava turns into big hard rocks in the water.
Locals：	Yes, they create gigantic rock formations in the ocean.
Fumiko:	I heard rare species of fauna and flora can be found in forests around the mountain.
Roger:	Indeed. You find many kinds of creatures unique to Hawaii. You'd feel like traveling in Jurassic Park of 'the Lost World'. You may have to watch out for dinosaurs.
Fumiko:	It sounds exciting!

ロジャー：	さあ、着いたよ。ここがキラウエア山の花火大会を見るのに一番の場所だよ。
文子　　：	素晴らしいわ。大きな火柱が上がって真っ赤な溶岩が吹き出ているのが見えるわ。
ロジャー：	きれいでしょ。暗い空にあの噴火を見るのは見ごたえがありますね。
文子　　：	それにあの溶岩が山の斜面を海まで流れて行くのを見るのは素晴らしいですね。
ロジャー：	はい、まるで大蛇が赤い舌を出して山を滑っていくようですね、しゅっしゅ音をたてながらね。溶岩が海にあたると海水がはげしい蒸気を起すんです。大きな天然の風呂ですね。東北地方で入った露天風呂を思い出しますよ。
文子　　：	それで溶岩は水の中で大きな岩に変わるのですか？
ロジャー：	そうです。海の中で巨大な岩の層を作ります。
文子　　：	山のまわりの森では珍しい動植物が見られると聞いているんですが。
ロジャー：	その通りです。ハワイ特有の生き物がたくさん見られますよ。「ロストワールド」のジュラシックパークに行っているような気分になるでしょう。恐竜に気をつけないといけないかもね。
文子　　：	おもしろそうね。

fantastic：fantasy 「幻想」のような。 phantom 「幻想、幽霊」も覚えてください。
column：「（大きな）柱」
red-hot：「灼熱の」
spew：「噴出す」
spectacular：spectacle 「壮観」の形容詞。
eruption：「噴火」　動詞 erupt 形容詞 eruptive も憶えておきましょう。 rupt は「破る」の意味
awesome：「すごい」　 awe 「畏敬」＋ some 「 ... を生じる」
look as if：「 ... のように見える」
hissing：「シューという音をたてながら」
hit：「 ... に当たる」「 ... にたどりつく」　 hit は「打つ」という意味だけではありません。
It reminds me of ....：「 ... を思い出す」
gigantic：「巨大な」　ギリシャ語の gigas 巨人に由来する。 giant 「巨人」も同グループ
fauna and flora：「動植物」
Jurassic Park of the Lost World：映画「ロストワールド：ジュラシックパーク」
watch out for dinosaurs：「恐竜を見張る」
