皆さんこんにちは。今月中日文子はマレーシアのマラッカを訪れます。マラッカはマレー半島のマラッカ海峡に面した港町で昔から西洋と東洋を結ぶ海上交通の要所でした。そのためいろいろな文化が入り混じった興味ある町です。

それではマラッカについての短い説明を見ましょう。

Malacca
Melaka and George Town, historic cities of the Straits of Malacca have developed over 500 years of trading and cultural exchanges between East and West in the Straits of Malacca. The influences of Asia and Europe have endowed the towns with a specific multicultural heritage that is both tangible and intangible. With its government buildings, churches, squares and fortifications, Melaka demonstrates the early stages of this history originating in the 15th century Malay sultanate and the Portuguese and Dutch periods beginning in the early 16th century. Featuring residential and commercial buildings, George Town represents the British era from the end of the 18th century. The two towns constitute a unique architectural and cultural townscape without parallel anywhere in East and Southeast Asia.

マラッカ
マラッカ海峡の歴史の町であるマラカとジョージタウンは500年に渡ってマラッカ海峡における東洋と西洋の貿易や文化交流を発展させてきた。アジアとヨーロッパの影響でこれらの町は有形、無形の多文化の遺産を与えられた。政府の建造物、教会、広場そして要塞に見られるようにマラカは15世紀のマレーサルタンや16世紀のポルトガル、オランダによる初期の歴史を表している。住居や商業ビルなどに特徴を持つジョージタウンは18世紀末の英国の時代を表徴している。この二つの町は東アジアや東南アジアでは文化的に他では見られない都市風景をつくっている。

さて文子はいつものようにハンサムな現地のガイド Steve に案内を頼みます。 Steve は中国人の母とイギリス人の父をもつ混血青年で大学で考古学を勉強している好青年です。文子も初めて会った時から好感を持ちました。

Steve:	My name is Steve and I'm happy to be your guide today. We are going to see Melaka first and George Town later in the afternoon.
Fumiko:	I'm Fumiko. I've been very much looking forward to this visit. I studied Asian history in college, especially Southeast Asia
Steve:	The Malacca Straits are crossroads of the East and the West, and a mixture of cultures developed. So, in that sense, it's a very interesting place.
Fumiko:	So, that's how you have people with various cultural backgrounds.
Steve:	Yes. Not only Asians but also Europeans began to visit this part of the world in the 16th century and they had interracial marriages.
Fumiko:	Your parents also had cross-cultural marriage?
Steve:	My mother is Chinese and my father English. Some of my friends have Japanese mothers and Dutch fathers, and some others have Indian and Portuguese parents.
Fumiko:	So you have many half-bloods.
Steve:	Not only half- bloods but also quarter-bloods or even more mixed. Racially, we may be half-blood or quarter-blood but we consider ourselves full-blooded. Well then, shall we begin our tour of Melaka?
	(Later in the day)
Fumiko:	It was so interesting and exciting. Thank you very much.
Steve:	My pleasure. I enjoyed the tour with you, too. As I study archaeology in the university, this place gives me great opportunities to do research.
Fumiko:	Are you going to be busy after work?
Steve:	No, That's it for today. Why?
Fumiko:	Would you like to have dinner with me? I'm alone and I'd appreciate if you kept me company a little longer.
Steve:	I'd be happy to. I'd like to introduce a nice restaurant to you.

Steve：	Steve と申します。今日はお客様のガイドをさせて頂きます。最初にマラカを見て午後にジョージタウンを見ることにします。
文子：	私は文子です。マラカに来る事をとても楽しみにしていたのよ。大学でアジア史を勉強したの。特に東南アジアをね。
Steve：	マラッカ海峡は東洋と西洋の交流地で入り混じった文化が発達したんですよ。だからそう意味でとてもおもしろい所です。
文子：	そうなの、そうして多様な文化の背景をもつ人がいるのね。
Steve：	はい、アジア人だけでなくヨーロッパ人も16世紀にはこの地にやって来て異なる人種が結婚しました。
文子：	あなたの両親も異文化の結婚だったの？
Steve：	母は中国人で父はイギリス人です。友達の中には母が日本人で父がオランダ人、そしてインド人とポルトガル人の両親を持つ友達もいます。
文子：	じゃ、あなた達はハーフが多いのね。
Steve：	ハーフだけじゃなく、クオーターやもっと入り混じったのもいますよ。人種的には私たちはハーフやクオーターかもしれないけど自分たちはフルブラッド（純血）だと思っていますよ。では、マラカのツアーを始めましょうか。

文子：	とてもおもしろかったわ。ありがとう。
Steve：	どういたしまして。私も楽しかったです。私は大学で考古学を研究しているのでこの場所は研究するのに最適なのです。
文子：	お仕事の後忙しいの？
Steve：	いいえ、今日はこれでおしまいです。どうしてですか？
文子：	一緒に食事でもどうですか。私は一人だし、もうちょっと付き合ってくれたらうれしいわ。
Steve：	ええ、喜んで。いいレストラン紹介しますよ。

look forward to + 名詞（句）　楽しみに待つ。動詞は動名詞（動詞＋ ing ）にすることに注意してください。
crossroads　交差点（通常複数形で使います。）
interracial　異人種間の（形容詞）
cross-cultural　異文化の（形容詞）
half-blood　混血（父母がそれぞれ違う人種から生まれた子供）
quarter-blood　1/4 混血（祖父母がそれぞれ違う人種から生まれた孫）
full-blooded　「純血」という意味と「元気な」という意味があり会話では両方のいみを掛け合わせています。
