皆さんこんにちは。
今月は中日文子はアメリカ合衆国アリゾナ州のグランドキャニオンを訪れます。
それでは今回もvocabulary quizから始めましょう。

さて文子はGrand Canyon国立公園にやって来ました。
この国立公園は1919年に出来ましたが、最初は狩猟や鉱山採掘、林業が許可されましたがその後棲息動植物を保護する法律が出来、1979年に世界遺産に指定されました。
キャニオンを見晴らすにはNorth Rim（北側）とSouth Rim（南側）がありますが南側のほうが人気があります。
ではGrand Canyonの簡単な説明を読んでみましょう。

Carved out by the Colorado River, the Grand Canyon (nearly 1,500m deep) is the most spectacular gorge in the world. Located in the state of Arizona, it cuts across the Grand Canyon National Park. Its horizontal strata retrace the geological history of the past 2 billion years. There are also prehistoric traces of human adaptation to a particularly harsh environment.

コロラド川に彫られているようなグランドキャニオンは世界で最も見ごたえがあります。アリゾナ州にあって、グランドキャニオン国立公園の中央を横切っています。横に走る地層は20億年の地学的歴史をたどることができます。そして人類の過酷な環境に順応する大昔の足跡も見られます。

Fumiko is on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon with her Guide, Steve.

Fumiko:	Wow! What a view! What a gorgeous landscape!
Steve:	Are you impressed?
Fumiko:	More than impressed! I feel like I'm seeing a prehistoric sight!
Steve:	As a matter of fact, you are! It hasn't changed much since millions of years ago.
Fumiko:	Millions of years ago?
Steve:	This canyon was formed during 6 millions years of geologic activity and erosion by the Colorado River. You see the tablelands and towering rocks down there? They are in fact mountains looked down from here.
Fumiko:	I can see the geological strata clearly on the canyon walls.
Steve:	Yes, They go back two billion years in history and four major geological eras.
Fumiko:	How deep is the canyon?
Steve:	It is 1.5 km deep and 445.8 km long twisting down the crust of the earth.
Fumiko:	I'd like to walk down the trail.
Steve:	It would take you days to go all the way down to the river.
Fumiko:	As I have only half a day here, I'll walk only a little.
Steve:	Would you like to try a mule ride?
Fumiko:	No, thank you. I'll walk myself and tell my friends in Japan how I felt.

文子はグランドキャニオンの南側（サウスリム）に ガイドのステイーヴといます。

文子：	わー！なんという景色！すばらしい光景！
ステイーヴ：	感動しましたか？
文子：	感動なんてもんじゃないわ。先史時代の景色を見てるみたいよ！
ステイーヴ：	まったくそのとおりですよ。何百年前からそんなに変わってないんですよ。
文子：	何百年も？
ステイーヴ：	この峡谷は6百年もの地質変動やコロラド川による浸食で出来たのです。下の方に台地やそびえている岩が見えますか？実はあれらはこの上から見た山なのです。
文子：	峡谷の斜面に地層がくっきり見えるわ。
ステイーヴ：	はい、あれらの横しまの地層は20億年も前にさかのぼり、4つの地質時代を経ているのです。
文子：	どのくらいの深さがあるのですか？
ステイーヴ：	1.5kmの深さがあり、長さは445.8kmで地殻をくねくねと走っています。
文子：	歩いて降りてみたいわ。
ステイーヴ：	川まで歩くには何日もかかりますよ。
文子：	ここには半日しかいられないから、ちょっと歩くだけよ。
ステイーヴ：	ラバに乗ってみますか？
文子：	いいえ、結構よ。自分で歩いて日本の友達にどんな感じか教えてあげるの。

近くにはアメリカンインデイアンの部落もありアメリカの地理や歴史を知るには欠かせない所です。
