Le Mont-saint-Michel （モンサンミシェル フランス）
今回はフランスノルマンデイのモンサンミシェルを訪れましょう。パリから北西、車で約４時間走ると、海岸線から１キロ程沖に突き出た岩山の上にモンサンミシェル修道院があります。フランスで最も有名な巡礼地で世界中から巡礼者、観光客が訪れます。堤防からラヴァンセ門をくぐり進むとみやげ物店、名物のオムレツを売っているレストラン、ホテルなどが軒を連ねます。参道グランドリュウ（Grande Rue）が修道院まで伸びシーズン中は数多くの人で賑わいます。ここではヨーロッパ最大の干満差が見られ、かつては満潮時には島への道が消えてしまい波にのまれた巡礼者も多数いたようですが、現在は堤防によって結ばれ潮の満ち引きに関係なく島に渡ることができます。しかし、近年はその堤防のせいで砂が沈殿堆積しぐるりと海水で囲まれることは稀となってしまいました。「馬が駆けてくるような」速度でモンサンミシェルまで波が押し寄せる光景はなかなか見られなくなってしまったのです。２００５年より障害となる砂を除き車の通行を規制し、モンサンミシェル本来の姿に戻す環境整備工事が始められています。周辺は危険な流砂床となっており勝手にあるくのは禁止されているが、ガイドを伴って散策するツアーは地元で開催されています。ではここでモンサンミシェルの簡単な歴史を英文のガイドブックから見てみましょう。
Perched on a rocky islet in the midst of vast sandbanks exposed to powerful tides between Normandy and Brittany stands the 'Wonder of the West', a Gothic-style Benediction abbey dedicated to the archangel St Michael, and the village that grew up in the shadow of its great walls. Built between the 11th and 16th centuries, the abbey is a technical and artistic tour de force having had to adapt to the problems posed by the unique natural site.
Le Mont-saint Michel is a major place of Christian pilgrimage. The worship of Saint Michel was introduced on the Mount in 708, and it became one of the most important places of medieval pilgrimage. Benedictines started building an abbey here in the 10th century.
Holding out against the assaults of man, time and the elements and also, the heroic resistance of the Mount to English attacks during the Hundred Years' War(14th and 15th centuries) made it a symbol of the French national identity. Monks left the abbey in 1790, and it was listed as a historic monument in 1874. The whole site has been returned to its former glory thanks to constant restoration work.
(ノルマンデイとブリタニーの間にあり激しい潮の流れにさらされ広大な砂防の真ん中にたたずむ岩山のてっぺんに立つゴチック様式のベネデイクト修道院はは大天使聖ミシェルに捧げられたものである。そしてこの修道院の塀の陰に村ができた。11世紀と17世紀の間に建てられたこの修道院は技術的にも芸術的にもすぐれた建物で自然な場所故に起こる特殊な問題にうまく適応している。
モンサンミシェルはキリスト教の主な聖地のひとつであり、聖ミシェル崇拝は７０８年に岩山の山頂に始まった。そして中世の巡礼の最も重要な聖地になり、ベネデイクト教徒は１０世紀に修道院の建立を始めました。
人間、時、自然の猛威に耐え、また100年戦争の時にイギリス軍の攻撃にも勇敢に立ち向かったこの修道院はフランスの国家シンボルとなった。修道僧が1790年に修道院を去った後、１８７４年に歴史記念物として登録され、修道院全体は絶え間ぬ修復作業により以前の栄光を取り戻している。）

| Peter: | Yes, grand and old. It was built in the 10th century. But it took hundreds of years to build it. |
| Fumiko: | It must have been a hard job to build it on such a rocky hill. |
| Peter: | You can imagine so. In those days, this islet was isolated from the mainland by the deep sea. |
| Fumiko: | So they ferried the building materials by ship. |
| Peter: | That's right. Even after they built it it was exposed to the elements, and crumbled down many times. And every time, they had to restore it. |
| Fumiko: | Let's walk up the hill. But wait, I'm getting hungry. Why don't we have a bite to eat before we start? |
| Peter: | Sounds like a good idea! There is a good restaurant serving omelet down the street. |
| Fumiko: | I'll save it for later. Now I'd prefer a hamburger now. |
| Peter: | As you like. |

| ピーター: | そうです。建てた後も、風雨に晒されて何回も崩れました。その度に、建て直ししなくてはならなかったのです。 |
| 文子： | さあ、歩いて登りましょうか。でも待って。私お腹すいちゃったから、行く前に何か食べましょうよ。 |
| ピーター: | それはいいですね。この通りを行ったところに、オムレツをやってるいいレストランがありますよ。 |
| 文子： | わたし、それは後にとっておくわ。今は、ハンバーガーのがいいわ。 |
