役立つフレーズ 位置や方角をたずねる

今回は位置や方角を訊いたり説明する表現を見てみましょう。
場所を訊ねる簡単な言い方は Where～?
です。例えば Where is the library?
(図書館はどこですか。） Where can I find a Japanese
restaurant around here? (このあたりで日本レストランはどこにありますか。）少しかしこまった表現になると
Where is the police station located?
(警察署はどこにありますか。)とか Can you direct
me to the city office? (市役所へ行く道を教えてください。)などと言えます。
催しが行われている場所を聞く時には Where is the festival taking place? (フェステイバルはどこでやっていますか。)とたずねます。そして丁寧に訊ねる時は、Could (又は Would ) you tell me where it is? (それはどこにありますか。)となります。
相手の行き先をたずねるには Where are you going?(どこへ行くのですか。) といえますが場合によってはもう少し遠回しに、Where are you heading?(どちらの方にいらっしゃいますか。)と言うのも良いでしょう。
方向を訊ねるときは Which way ～ ? を使って Which way is the mall?(モールはどちらの方ですか。)と訊きます。でもたいていの場合その答えは方向だけでなく具体的な位置を言います。例を見てみましょう。

場所を訊かれ答える時は次のような表現を憶えておくと便利です。
| この道をまっすぐ行きなさい。 | Go straight down this street. |

| 二つ目の角を右に曲がりなさい。 | Turn right at the second corner. |
| 次の交差点を左に行きなさい。 | Take a left at the next intersection. |
| 映画館を通り越して行きなさい。 | Go past the cinema. |
| その通りにあります。 | It's on (又はin) the street. |
| 左側にあります。 | It's on your (又はthe) left. |
| 銀行の隣にあります。 | It's next to the bank. |
| 消防署を越えた所です。 | It's over(又はpast) the fire department. |
| 通りの反対側です。 | It's across(又はon the other side of) the street. |
| 本屋とスーパーの間です。 | It's between the bookstore and the grocery store. |
| 花屋の裏です。 | It's behind(又はin the back of) the florist's. |
| 角にあります。 | It's on(又はin) the corner. |
では会話例を見てみましょう。
例1（On a street）
| A: | 「Excuse me. I'm looking for a cake shop. Could you tell me where I can find one?」(すみません。ケーキ屋さんはどこですか。) |

| B: | 「Let's see. There's one down the street.」（そうですね。この通りを行ったところにありますよ。） |
| A: | 「Is it far?」(遠いですか。) |
| B: | 「No, it isn't. It's only a few- minute walk. You'll find it on your right.」（いいえ、歩いて2～3分です。右側にあります。） |
例2 (In a department store)
| A: | 「Excuse me. Where can I find the toy department?」(すみません、おもちゃ売り場を探しているのですが教えて頂けますか。) |

さて、まもなくChristmas や a new year がやって来ます(Christmas and a new year are just around the corner.)。来年も頑張って英語を使って旅行を楽しみましょう。ことわざに「意志あるところに道あり」(Where there is a will, there is a way.)というのがあります。頑張りましょう。
